How to talk to a woman #9 - sexual attraction between men and women - One key factor that can help in understanding and communicating with women better is understanding the biological and psychological basis of sexual attraction. Why is there sexual attraction between two people? To answer that, we must first explore what this attraction entails, who or what governs it, and why it happens.

Sexual attraction is, in part, a chemically mediated phenomenon. Pheromones—chemical substances secreted by the body—are crucial in this process. Although imperceptible to our conscious mind, they are detected by the vomeronasal organ located in the nasal cavity, which then triggers a neurological and hormonal response. Pheromones stimulate the hypothalamus and other areas of the brain involved in emotional regulation and sexual arousal. Thus, they influence behavior without us being consciously aware of their effect.

One of the most studied pheromones is androstadienone, found in higher concentrations in male sweat. According to olfactory psychology expert Rachel Herz, androstadienone can activate sexual and emotional responses in women. This compound can influence mood, increase levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), and lead to a sense of well-being in the presence of men who secrete it. In some cases, this may create feelings of attraction or emotional openness toward those men.

However, the response to androstadienone is not universal among women. Factors such as menstrual cycle phase, individual hormonal balance, genetic predisposition, and even environmental influences such as stress or prior sexual experiences can modulate sensitivity to this pheromone. Additionally, a woman’s perception of another woman’s interest in a man may be subconsciously influenced by these same chemical signals, potentially fueling jealousy or competition.

It is important to note that attraction is not purely biological. Some individuals identify as sapiosexual, meaning they are primarily or exclusively attracted to intelligence. For these individuals, intellectual stimulation is the most significant driver of romantic or sexual desire. Therefore, relying solely on physical traits like muscular build or the volume of one’s sweat is unlikely to be effective in creating attraction across the board.

Moreover, the chemical composition of a person’s sweat is influenced by factors such as diet, health status, and personal hygiene. Spicy foods, alcohol, and certain medications can alter body odor in ways that may either attract or repel others.

In conclusion, sexual attraction is a multifaceted interplay of chemical, hormonal, psychological, and intellectual factors. While pheromones like androstadienone can influence attraction, they are only one component in a much more complex equation. Men who focus solely on their physical appearance or pheromonal output may miss the broader picture: meaningful connection and attraction often require emotional intelligence, intellectual compatibility, and timing as much as, if not more than, physical chemistry.

Simple explanation in English:

Sexual attraction isn't just about looks or muscles. It often starts with invisible chemical signals called pheromones, which we smell without realizing it. One such chemical, androstadienone, is found more in men’s sweat and can make some women feel more relaxed or attracted. But not all women react the same way. Other things matter too—like how smart or kind someone is, what they eat (because it changes how their sweat smells), and what kind of person the woman usually likes. Some women are more attracted to intelligence than muscles. So, just working out and sweating isn’t a guarantee someone will like you—you also need that “something special” that makes a real connection.
