The Psychology Laboratory within the Department of Psychology and Educational Sciences at Babeș-Bolyai University in Romania reports on its website that its studies focus on various aspects of cognitive, social, and emotional development in children and adolescents. The research includes both typical developmental trajectories and atypical profiles, acknowledging the diversity of developmental outcomes and the importance of early identification of deviations from normative patterns.
The studies predominantly focus on children aged one to seven years. This age range is critical because early childhood is marked by rapid neurodevelopment and the formation of essential cognitive and emotional competencies. During this period, the brain undergoes significant synaptic growth, pruning, and myelination, making it particularly responsive to environmental stimuli and interactions. These processes lay the groundwork for language acquisition, executive function, emotional regulation, and social cognition. The primary objective of the laboratory’s research is to understand the underlying mechanisms of psychological development and to identify strategies that can optimize developmental trajectories. This includes the prevention of various psychological disorders and the implementation of interventions when a child exhibits atypical developmental patterns. Preventive approaches are grounded in evidence from developmental psychopathology, which emphasizes the importance of early detection and targeted intervention to mitigate the progression of disorders such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and anxiety disorders.
In addition to their research activities, members of the laboratory are involved in organizing a range of academic and scientific events such as summer schools, conferences, workshops, and discussion groups. These initiatives are designed not only to disseminate knowledge but also to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. The goal is to connect with other research centers as well as with professionals working directly with children in fields such as education, healthcare, and family support services.
